For the price Not so great!

Submitted by TonyDIY - 10/2/2017

Replacing a KitchenAid DW that expired after 12+ years. I also have other KitchenAid products that have performed very well. KitchenAid was my first choice without researching. First thing I noticed when installing is the water connection is now made of plastic (metal previously) and the connection part is NOT included. The sound dampening fabric does not account for standard depth DW/Cabinet space and had to be removed (same as last experience). In previous model there was also a sound dampening rubber mat with insulation that slid in under and at base of DW. No longer supplied. Side screw mount holes were not aligned with provided clips and I had to drill holes in them to align side mount screws so it wasn't on angle (I flipped the clips on both sides to be sure it wasn't installer). The panel instructions provided, with glue strips, were overly complicated. Install diagrams did not list all measurements like an architecture plan and left me guessing would the existing water supply and electric locations work. DW still juts out ~1/8+ of an inch proud. There is NO technical support for install or install guides posted on web prior to purchase for review. Lower and upper rack arms when moving in/out of DW make a scraping noise like fingers on a chalk board. I cringe each time I load it now. The bottom rack layout has changed from previous model and we NOT able to accommodate dishes for a family of four. The panel buttons although flat are easily selected just by sliding your finger on the panel. For the price this DW should be much easier to install, have a well-designed rack layout/space, rack arms should not make noise, a metal water connection (direct to water line) and provide easier install of panel. KitchenAid should be ashamed of themselves for the price of this model. Especially when there is such a focus on consumer service. Next time showroom and looking at other brands first.

I think I got a lemon

Submitted by Kitchen Genie - 9/8/2017

As a kitchen designer I have recommended and used kitchenaid dishwashers for the past 13 years. However, my latest purchase of model#KDTM504EPA has been problematic from the very start of installation two years ago. Initially the problem was with the detergent packets when placed in the compartment they would not completely dissolve. After two calls to have this serviced the repair man was told by KitchenAid that is was a "design" flaw which prevented the dishwasher compartment from fully opening. The solution was to throw the detergent packet into the bottom of the tub and not use the designated compartment. I was annoyed with this solution but went along with it. After about a year of use it developed another issue. It started to leak from the bottom of the door in rhythmic concert with the sounds of water from the spray arm. A year later and still no resolution. After being a loyal user of KitchenAid dishwasher and highly recommending it to my clients I am now going to have to purchase a Bosch. So disappointed that I wasted so much money of this unit!

best dishwasher I've ever owned

Submitted by DCkitchen - 8/31/2017

We have been more than happy with this dishwasher. It is so quiet that often times when it is running guests don't even realize it's in the middle of a cycle and open the door to load it! It cleans dishes without needing to pre-wash and the drying cycle is fantastic. When using the drying agent almost all our dishes come out completely dry. We have also used the top rack only feature to wash crystal and delicate glass and it works perfectly. Would highly recommend this dishwasher and the integrated panel with top buttons is just the icing on the cake.

Fatal flaw in pump design --> failure

Submitted by Tripp Knightly - 7/5/2017

Have had this in place for just over a year (just in time for the warranty to expire). A great dishwasher in all respects, but I now realize it has a fatal (and inexcusable) flaw. Two tiny shards of glass made it through the coarse screen in the sump in the bottom to the circulation pump. The pump in turn had no means to prevent these shards from destroying the fine metal mesh screen and plastic workings of the pump impeller assembly. This seems to me a design flaw. The reality is sooner or later, however careful you are, something tiny, a glass chip or some other non-biodegradable object is going to make it into the dishwasher. The filters must not allow something to pass which can destroy the pump. This is a $200 part. What's worse is, unlike prior designs, if a glass breaks you have no way of knowing if you've picked up all the pieces. Prior designs exposed the impeller and fine screen right in the sump, accessible from the tub itself. Now, what are you supposed to do? Pull the dishwasher out and disassemble the pump to look for glass or other objects? I fear that I'm now forced to pay for the new pump and that this may not be the last time this happens. This is awful.

Submitted by whirlpool partner losing confidence - 4/19/2017

I purchased this dw (or the prior model) 2 years ago as I was interested in a sleek panel integrated (white) kitchen. The interior design is great and it is super quiet. However, as far as getting my sleek panel look, this DW was a bomb. I Had read in reviews that the black plate on the bottom was a distraction, so purchased a white panel to swap out, but due to the side venting design, the dishwasher can not be placed so that the panel is flush to the rest of the cabinets (see photo). Add to that the black vents which make the look even less concealed. I don't understand how other pictures in this review section and on line show the panel to be perfectly flush, since it can not vent that way. (to that end, I don't know why whirlpool did not design it to vent thru the bottom kickplate area?) To add insult to injury, the dishwasher pump developed a slow leak that was not detectable when running, but after 6 months of usage ultimately buckled my wood laminate floor. Whirlpool covered the pump replacement under warrantee, but refused to cover the damage to the floor, because I had pulled up the warped floor before I contacted whirlpool and they said they would not cover without inspecting the damage. They suggested I file a claim with my insurance company instead! I've been a whirlpool/kitchenaid fan for years, but of the last 4 appliances I purchased - all top of the line (convection stove, counterdepth French refrigerator and now this dishwasher) each of them had defects in performance within the first year (the stove from the first day). Customer service help is spotty at best. Wish I had saved my money on this design and settled for a white appliance from day one. the look would have been better, my floor would still be in tact and I would have saved at least $1000. Sorry whirlpool/kitchenaid...you need to do better. (PS, in terms of functionality, my elderly mother found this DW way to confusing to manage- as it resets if not closed in 5 seconds

Submitted by Gigi - 3/2/2017

We bought this two months ago and our glasses are noticeably clearer than they were with our former premium dishwasher. It is so quiet sometimes we can't tell if it is even on. We also love the length and accessibility of the silverware compartment. Finally , the many ways you can adjust and convert it to accomadate different sizes of pots and such makes it usable in ways we have not experienced. Couldn't be happier with our Kitchen Aid dishwasher.

Heating element design flaw

Submitted by Kal - 2/8/2017

The circular heating element on the bottom has warped so badly twice , that the spray arms rub along it. I bought it in August 2015 and it was under warranty for the 1st replacement in Aug. 2016 , but 5 months later it has greatly warped again. Seems like a design flaw. I do not use it to dry the dishes either. Kithchenaid will not take responsibility for the problem and it looks like I will have to repeatedly pay several hundred dollars for periodic replacement. This was not a cheap dishwasher either. On the plus side it is quiet, cleans well and is nicely organized inside.

Just Great

ERROR, IMPROPER ARGUMENTS, ARGUMENTS MUST BE OF THE FORM NAME="VALUE", command = if_string test="My grandchildren call me "RuRu"" 2/6/2017

This dishwasher is so quiet, I don't know it is on. It also seems to have some of those Keebler elves inside telling it the amount of dirt and scrubbing needed. Every load (light, medium, heavy) seems to come out perfectly. The cycle might take a little longer than I expected, but for the consistent cleaning results, it is worth it. Lastly, I really like how the inside is configured. I seem to find a really good spot for different shapes and sizes. And I love the silverware tray at the top. It is easy to use and, unlike when silverware is thrown into cup-size bins, fork tines and other pieces are clean.

Submitted by kitchen knave - 1/13/2017

I'm very happy with the exceptional performance and features of this dishwasher. My dishes are spotless and dry no matter what I throw in it. The interior light is great, the shallow top third drawer is super convenient for spatulas, large serving flatware and miscellaneous small, odd shaped things that might fall through the other two racks. It's very quiet which is wonderful, allowing me to keep entertaining and the guests don't hear it going. I highly recommend this machine.

Replace my Bosch with Kitchenaid

Submitted by GMan1600 - 12/6/2016

When my Bosch died after 11 years, which I never cared for because the brackets on the rack system kept falling off and even the wheels. So I researched the KithenAids since I was happy with the one I had in my last home. I am very happy with it. First think you do is throw away all the extra baskets that are hanging on the racks, all they do is take away prime real estate for dishes, pots and pans. I love the top rack that holds knives etc...no chance of cutting yourself when unloading. Also nice is the utensil holder, it is on the side and large. Throw away the cover on it. The only reason it gets 4 and not 5 stars is that even after I raise the middle rack, I can't get my large cutting boards in, like it could in the Bosch. Cleans well, make sure you use the "pro clean & pro dry"

Excellent, But One Little Quirk Raises Energy Costs

Submitted by Tess - 11/2/2016

We bought this a month ago and it mostly works fine. It is very quiet, as expected, and it cleans. That is what you want from a dishwasher. There is one quirk. Twice now the door of the compartment holding the detergent has failed to open so that the dishes weren't cleaned and it had to be run again. The second time through, the door did open. I'm wondering if there's some trick to closing the door of which I am unaware. I think the price was way too high to get an appliance that does what it is supposed to do, almost.

Excellent Appliannce

Submitted by Ursula - 7/30/2016

After owning a previous Kitchen Aid dishwasher for almost 20 years, I was pleasantly surprised at the efficiency of my new one. The only problem I have is with the installation. They told me you had changed the design so the hoses are now mounted on the left side. Therefore, I have a large gap on the left side of the unit itself while the right side is flush against the cabinet. I am trying to figure out how to make it look central in the slot between the cabinets, but so far I can't figure out how to do it. I hired a plumber, but they told me there was nothing they could do other than tear out cabinets, which I do not want to do.

Submitted by paul - 7/20/2016

After 15 years I retired my previous Kichenaid dishwasher after replacing the control panel about six times in the last two years. I've tried adjusting the sliding piece, but nothing seems to help.

Submitted by MBE - 6/28/2016

I'm so disappointed in this product. I ordered a panel ready kitchen aid that had the special water bottle cleaning system... It was supposed to be the top of the line dishwasher. After it was installed we realized the special water bottle feature had been "phased out" in the panel ready design. Not only were we not notified before installation the distributor we purchased the product from wasn't made aware either. So, I over paid for a product that they do not make anylonger. Additionally there is a tray at the top of the glass shelf where you can lay additional long knives, spatulas, spoons etc, that don't fit in the silverware basket. The height is so minimal that most spoons and spatulas don't fit in the shelf. This features eliminates the space for tall glasses to fit in the top shelf...much less a water bottle. Over priced, smoke and mirror product. Would opt for a lower prices, more basic model where the features actually are benefitial.

This is the first KitchenAid dishwasher I have owned. I am so impressed with how quiet it is and how clean my dishes are. I also like the way I can tell what stage the washer is in (wash, rinse or dry) by the color of the upper light. I have the panel ready and on my other washer it was a guess at best. I would definitely recommend this to someone!

It's Ok but it's not a Miele

Submitted by Dave - 3/13/2016

We just remodeled a new house and moved in. At our last house we remodeled we installed a Miele dishwasher. Probably twice the price. The KA is fine, but the top rack design is wrong. It's designed to imitate the Miele which load silverware in vertically. But the little pegs on this machine aren't high enough to hold them up. Therefore the silverware sometimes doesn't get clean. It is quiet(a must), and it has multiple cycles which seem to work fine. We were trying to save a bit of money and we did.

Plastic Everywhere

Submitted by Aeson - 2/27/2016

I built a kitchen around these specific appliances with custom doors. This dishwasher did not last 2 years. There are several plastic connections that break off, and now the top rack is in a closet. Also the silverware holder is a disaster - more poorly designed broken plastic. Look for reviews from customers that have had this more than a year.

Not as good as I expected

Submitted by Steve - 1/10/2016

I purchased this two weeks ago. It has some nice features like the lower rack rolls out on ball bearing rail. Light inside is nice. Cleans well most of the time but have found food inside on door and dishes a couple of times. If you have tall glasses like the tall tervis tumblers, you will need to remove third shelf. Above all, I don't like that it does not dry your glasses and some other items well. If you have some dimples in the bottom of glasses when upside down, most will have water in them the next morning. Very disappointed. Unlike our old 20 yr old GE which had a heating element to heat the water and really get the dishes and glasses very hot to dry them. My guess, it is a government requirement for energy efficiency. Not looking to save a few dollars, just want dry dishes. Also no option to dry longer? Also, would be nice to offer at handle and/or temporary panel until the kitchen remodel is complete.
